Erlo visits you at home for a hands on demonstration of how to use your camera. He makes sure that you can go from switching on you camera to downloading the final images without a problem. This course will benefit anyone with little or no knowledge of digital photography, to take better photos and have more confidence behind the lens.

Course Duration- Two hour sessions (two sessions are recommended)

Location- Anywhere near Hermanus

Course price- R300 p/p per session

Requirements- Any camera in a good working condition

Weekend Photography Workshop

With it’s green capped mountains that run into the temperamental Atlantic ocean and every beautiful valley in between, the Overberg is known for some of the worlds most spectacular natural scenes. It is in this setting that Erlo enjoys pursuing his love for photography the most, and now you have the opportunity to join him and experience it for yourself. Erlo will be hosting photography workshops on Waterfalls Farm 10km outside of Hermanus, on the banks of the Kleinriver Lagoon. Join him as he spends a weekend in Waterfall’s cozy farmhouse where he will show you how to optimally use your camera in an outdoor setting and even share a couple of his photography secrets.

This course is aimed at catering for your individual needs and Erlo will provide practical solutions to help assist you in improving your photography, no matter where you are at.

Note: This course is intended for people who already have a basic knowledge of cameras and photography but who would like to extend their knowledge of photography with a focus on nature.

We spend two nights staying in a very homey farm house on a beautiful farm outside Hermanus. The weekend will be spent enjoying nature and each other’s company, at the same time sharpening our photography skills. We will visit waterfalls, caves, and beautiful beaches, with great photo opportunities guaranteed.

Spouses and children are more than welcome to come along even if they are not running the course. Non-photography guests can join for half price.

A minimum of three and a maximum of six photography guests can be accommodated.

General Itinerary:

Pre-sunrise at Kwaaiwater, Hermanus for some long exposure seascapes and sunrise photography.

Hike to waterfall and forest (perfect for that “soft” waterfalls that you see in magazines)

Night scapes including star trails and other long exposures.

How to take landscapes in the middle of the day when light is not ideal.

Painting with light, experimenting on some interesting old buildings on the farm.

Hermanus cliff path early in the morning on the cliffs, whales almost guaranteed between July and November.

Post production tips between photography sessions for anyone interested.

There will be heaps of off time to do with as you wish, go for a swing into the swimming hole, edit some photos, birding, or just rest in the shade of a blue gum tree.

Subjects that we will cover:

Scouting for a scene
Types of light
Long Exposure Photography
Manipulating light
Painting with light as a way to light a subject
Long exposures
Managing gear in difficult situation, keeping gear safe and dry
Thinking creatively

You will need:

A DSLR camera, make does not matter.
A Tripod, any make or model as long as it will hold your camera still.
It will be a self catering weekend. There will be a fire every evening (weather permitting), so bring meat and whatever else you like.
A hat, sunscreen, swimming cloths and good walking shoes, we won’t let an opportunity to play go by.
Please bring a torch for photography in the evenings (a headlamp works well)
Poncho or raincoat and gumboots, bad weather is often the best time to photograph nature.
Willingness to get up before the sun does; chasing photos often means giving up some sleep.
