Born on 31 October 1988 in Pretoria, Erlo grew up in a Afrikaans home. At the age of 11 his family moved to the coast of the Eastern Cape where his love of nature and the ocean in particular, was cultivated.
He was introduced to photography at the young age of 12 and soon fell in love with the art of  photography and in particular nature photography. As a school boy, Erlo honed his photography skills by photographing sport events and functions for his school magazine. His love of nature however always pulled him and his camera towards the outdoors and in particular, the coastline. After matriculating at Port Rex T.H.S. in East London, he went on to study photography at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).  He completed his Diploma in Photography at TUT in 2009 and decided to further his studies in this field by studying for a BTech. As part of his B Tech Degree in Photography, Erlo walked the entire coastline of South Africa to photograph landscapes. This gutsy feat of endurance that lasted 300 days taught Erlo a valuable selection of skills that few photographers posses. He finished the 3200km walk on 2 Feb 2011 and in the same year received his B tech degree in Visual Communication (Photography) at TUT with distinction.
Shortly after he finished his studies he got married to Lauren (the driving force behind most of the things Erlo does, including his long walk). They are currently living and working in Hermanus, Western Cape. While working as a freelance photographer nationally, Erlo spends much of his time outdoors, doing what he enjoys most, nature photography. He is also a photographic guide, showing and teaching clients the art of landscape photography along the beautiful Overberg region.
Erlo is an enthusiastic person who loves nature and enjoying life. It is this love of nature that is evident in his photography. As a landscape photographer and adventurer Erlo wishes to open people’s eyes to the beauty of God’s creation through his lens. Lauren, Erlo’s wife, plays a vital role in his photography, as his assistant and best friend, she makes the best half of a great team.
Some of Erlo’s photographic awards include:
